This is a unique opportunity for the right person who wants to live and work "on mission".  As a "Ministry Associate" at Hope Barrie, you will:

  • Provide hands-on supervision and oversee the daily operation of the Higher Grounds Coffee House Social Enterprise;

  • Act as an "outreach worker" by serving our marginalized street-involved neighbours; and

  • Act as a mentor to help staff and volunteers achieve job skills in a graduated programme.

Higher Grounds Coffee House acts as an "entry point" for marginalized persons to connect with other Hope Barrie programming, including community groups, addiction recovery and mental health support, food programmes, mentorships, housing, and church.  The selected candidate will often function as the welcoming face and an ambassador of Hope Barrie.

This is a flexible full-or-part time position for the right individual who demonstrates the desired mix of leadership skills, relational skills, and restaurant or commercial kitchen experience (training will be provided for the right individual, assessed, in order of priority, by Character, Chemistry, and Competency).

You must be able to agree to the Hope Barrie Statement of Faith and any applicable Hope Barrie Cultural Documents and policies.

Intern ("Peer Support Worker")

This unique opportunity is an "immersive" learning and serving opportunity for the person who feels called to ministry among the marginalized.  As an Intern and acting as a Peer Support Worker, you will:

  • Provide direct supervision to residents of a congregant living facility;

  • Mentor men of all ages to set and to achieve goals in all areas of life;

  • Apply your biblical knowledge in teaching people the Way of Jesus

  • Live on-site in the congregant living Hope House Barrie! and

  • Be teachable.

This position is open to the right applicant who possesses the following characteristics:

  • Able to live on-site, full-time, 24/7, in a fully immersive ministry environment;

    • This may be amended based on mutual agreement of both the candidate and Hope Barrie, and may reflect periodic overnight relief work versus 24/7 live-in immersion.​

  • A Bible College graduate, a Seminary graduate, or a Bible College or Seminary student or other university student with demonstrable maturity and leadership ability, or a mature follower of Jesus with the appropriate level of knowledge and experience;

  • Willingness and Eagerness to learn and to grow, particularly in character and skill as they relate to Christian discipleship and missional living;

  • As a position that is funded by a Federal job grant, the selected candidate can be no older than 30 years of age at the start of the term of employment, is a Canadian Citizen, a permanent resident, or a person on whom refugee protection has been conferred, and is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations.  (International students are not eligible).  Fluency in spoken and written English is required.

The term of this position is as follows, but can be changed with advance agreement to meet the needs of the candidate or the ministry:

  • Position 1:

    • Start Date:  May-June 2021; 

    • Duration:  7 Weeks (ends no later than August 31, 2021), extendable to 14 Weeks based on mutual agreement for the right candidate.

  • Position 2:​​

    • Start Date:  September 6, 2021: 

    • Duration: ​  7 Weeks (ends no later than February 14, 2022).

  • Important Notes:

    • Final Positions and dates to be confirmed.​

    • Positions 1 and 2 may be filled by separate candidates or may be combined for a single candidate.

    • The Rate of Pay is the Ontario minimum wage at $14.25/hour paid at 40 hours/week.

    • Minimal Occupancy Fees (Room and Board Expenses) will be deducted at source to cover the costs of meals and laundry, only in the case of a 24/7 agreement.

"Assistant", Hope Barrie

Higher Grounds Coffee House

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This "Special Assistant"  will serve in a cafe environment and will learn and apply restaurant, kitchen, and customer service skills. 

 

Higher Grounds Coffee House provides job-skills training and life-skills mentorships to participants of Hope Barrie programming and others in a job creation enterprise.   You will serve the community in an "outreach" role by providing prepared food to street-involved individuals, and you will support the programme needs of groups and programmes at Hope Barrie including Hope House Barrie and The Hope Centre.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Special Assistant is a person who is willing to be mentored and is eager to develop job skills, social skills, and personal character.  You will function within a team and will be needed to exercise integrity, self-motivation, and eagerness to learn and to work.  The candidate must be in agreement and must be able to support the vision and mission of Hope Barrie. 

In addition, the Special Assistant must meet the following requirements:  
•    be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment;
•    is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred;
•    is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations and has a valid Social Insurance Number.
•    International Students are not eligible.

 

The Term of this Position is as follows:

  • Position 1:  (2 openings)

    • Start Date:  May or June, 2021;​

    • Duration:  9 Weeks (ends no later than August 31, 2021);

  • Position 2:  (2 openings)

    • Start Date:  September 6, 2021;​

    • Duration:  9 Weeks (ends no later than February 14, 2022);

Relief Peer Support Worker

Hope House Barrie

 

This is a unique opportunity for the person who feels called to ministry among the marginalized.  As a Relief Peer Support Worker, you will:

  • Provide direct supervision to residents of a congregant living facility;

  • Provide friendship and guidance to men in recovery from addiction and/or poverty;

  • Be able to provide personal accountability and physical security of the premises;

  • Model a growing Christ-like lifestyle in both knowledge and practice; and

  • Be teachable.

You will apply your gifts of discernment and hospitality in a setting that is a "ministry of friendship" among people who need a friend, guidance, and support.  Lived-experience and/or knowledge of addiction and trauma is an asset, but not required.

This role is a volunteer role with opportunity for advancement into paid employment.

This role is a commitment of a minimum of two days per month with opportunities to serve more.  For the right candidate, this role may also include periodic overnight stays for one or two nights.
